"The most effective catechetical program for adolescents are integrated into a comprehensive program of pastoral ministry for youth that includes catechesis, community life, evangelization, justice and service, leadership development, pastoral care, and prayer and worship. Such programs aim to empower young people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today; to draw young people to responsible participation in the life, mission, and work of the Catholic faith community; and to foster the total personal and spiritual growth of each young person." (National Directory for Catechesis, p. 201)
We have weekly classes for grades 1-8 on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:30pm. The 1st-6th grade program features reading and discussion of the weekly Gospel, as well as various activities to help the youth understand and live out their faith. The youth are provided with opportunities to do service projects in our community as well as the Rochester area. Religion classes are designed to teach the children that Christianity is a life style, not a thing reserved for Sunday. Parents are encouraged to help in the classrooms and take an active role in the teaching of their children.
The 7th grade focuses on Theology of the Body for middle school students. There is little doubt that pre-teens are in an often confusing time of quest and discovery, especially with issues concerning their bodies, their sexuality, and their future. This series has been developed to help educators, youth ministers, and parents successfully deliver solid and relevant answers. Theology of the Body for Teens: Middle School Edition answers questions such as:
Who am I?
Are there consequences to my actions?
What is the difference between love and lust?
How do I balance family, friends, school, God, music, TV, internet, texting, etc., in my daily life?
How can I discern my vocation to marriage, priesthood, or religious life?
How do I deal with bullying, gossip, peer pressure, pornography, divorce, etc?
Can I live my Catholic faith no matter how I messed up in the past?
The 8th grade class focuses on the Bible and going through the T3 Bible timeline the first half of the year. In the second half of the year, the student gets an extensive review of the faith that prepares them for Confirmation.
